What a week: Misty Copeland, Women’s World Cup, and so much more

WeekinReview

A woman can’t go away on vacation without the entire world happening while she’s gone! This has been an amazing week for a lot of reasons–not the least of which is all of the strides women made.

Notable Hellos and Goodbyes
At the age of 32, Misty Copeland became the first African-American woman to be named principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. Watching her move is a little like staring into the sun, so enjoy!

After 44 years on Sesame Street, Sonia Manzano, who plays Maria, is leaving the show. Manzano was one of the first Latina women I saw on TV, and taught millions of children around the world about pregnancy, AIDS, death, and other life issues. She will be missed!

Congratulations
To the U.S. and Japan Women’s National Teams, for making it to the World Cup Finals. No matter who you’re rooting for in tomorrow’s game, certainly we can agree this is a tough, talented group of competitors.

The “It’s About Damn Time” Awards
To Nigeria, for banning female genital mutilation. According to the World Health Organization, more than 125 million girls and women have suffered this brutal procedure. Let’s hope Nigeria serves as inspiration–and pressure–for other nation’s lawmakers.

To the Supreme Court of the United States, for protecting the 14th Amendment, and making it legal for my gay and lesbian friends to marry.

Thousands of other triumphs–large and small–happened this week. Let’s keep them coming!
